Painting | Al-Khalifa Mosque
The events that took place in that square and were associated with it gave it great importance and a glowing aura. It was designated for performing the five daily prayers, the two Eid prayers, and also for holding all religious celebrations. The controls for performing prayers here had a very influential impact on its use and importance. As all the residents of the city had to perform all these prayers there. They obliged the neighborhood elders to monitor the attendance of all their members and to report absences. To prevent any competition in this field, the construction of mosques, chapels, and the like anywhere in the city was completely prohibited. All these controls gave the arena special consideration and high value. Although it was and still is open and unfurnished, it was called the Caliph Mosque. It still bears that name despite the passage of more than a century and the succession of influential historical eras.
